Wine, dine and great design! That's our motto, well it's not but it could be. We are Modern Onion but this area is mostly reserved for a different type of flora... the Tulip. No, we're not selling flowers here but we can help with the arrangement of your dining area!
The Tulip or Pedestal group was designed by Eero Saarinen between 1955-56, aimed to change an 'ugly, confusing, unrestful world' of table and chair legs into a more organic and visually enjoyable experience continuing his 'one piece, one material' thesis. Though the Tulip chairs and tables are not quite made of one piece or material it's easy to see the concept behind the final design.
These aren't your garden variety replicas we have here, ours are superior quality and include dining chairs in both arm and side chair format and a large selection of dining tables in different sizes and finishes. The flag ship here being our beautiful oval Tulip dining tables made with real Cararra marble from Italy.
You may find other items too in this section, such as Aarnio's Parabel table and anything else we decide to add to our dining collection.
At Modern Onion there's always spring in our step and we're here to make your dining room blossom!
The inheritance of our planet and what better way to prepare them for this inescapable burden than to introduce them to mid century modern design from an early age? Sure life skills such as manners, hygiene and how to survive the zombie apocalypse are important but that's not why you're here and we sell furniture (that will most likely survive the apocalypse) so around here that's numero uno!
We have some great things for your little terrors too, all have been tested by our in house loon-ions. We've got Eames inspired tables and chairs, of which the tables are laminated, great for the playroom apocalypse and the chairs are high quality plastic. Though you'll likely feel like a zombie after wiping them down a million times the chairs will remain undead!
We also have ultra cute kids sized Aarnio ball chairs that are made to order and can be custom colored too, which is great for color matching projects. There's a bit of a wait for them sometimes but aren't we all trying to teach children (and ourselves) the value of patience?
Our factory is as creative as your children, so if you're looking for another mid century chair in a smaller size then send us a mail and we'll see what can be cooked up at onion HQ!
Without light, the world would be a considerably gloomier place! But why get choked up in a dull, lifeless room full of ordinary lightbulbs when you can have an artichoke inspired Lamp infusing light through the beauty of 80 individual leaves?
You’d be surprised to know that designer Poul Henningsen actually grew up in a small Danish town with no electricity, yet by 1958 he was commissioned to create a new lighting fixture for a restaurant in Copenhagen. Also known as “PH Artichoke”, Henningsen devoted his effort into researching light, by observing the flaws on harsh bulbs that were only available at the time. This juxtaposition between utilising artificial light, and the Artichoke’s natural form, highlights the influence that nature has on his work. The design served more than just providing a source of light, it emphasises the importance of modern art to our everyday lives. It’s no use just having a functioning lightbulb nowadays, it’s all about articulating its functionality through sculptural shapes. As you can see, Henningsen did this just right, as his design has become so iconic that there’s nothing else quite like it.
What makes this lamp so extraordinary is the gradual radiance of the light that’s not harsh to the eyes, giving it a warm, coppery glow to your dining room. This idea came from Henningsen’s desire to circulate the light source across the room, which not only saves you buying endless number of lightbulbs, but this lamp is almost an alternative to chandeliers, with a modern twist.
The original production is made of brushed aluminium leaves, cut using laser, in a beautiful bronze, copper aluminium material that is reflective of natural, warm sunset glow. At Modern Onion, our replica doesn’t just come with one color, but in five variations. With copper, gold, silver, red and white, we offer a range of color for every room, as well as sizes small and medium. We suggest a medium for those that want beautiful, warm lights to really shine in your dining room, and perhaps smaller ones for the office or perhaps hallway for a more comfortable surrounding all round.
So whichever artichoke suits your taste, this lamp is almost too iconic not to have in your dining room, even if you’re not a big fan of artichokes themselves! Maintaining the highest quality, we replicate this design using aluminium leaves, making this lamp a lot more affordable than the original.
Mid-century modern is all about the future. The designs are wacky, and you can almost get an insight of what the late 20th century designer's envision for future generations; a world full of spaceships and robots. They created futuristic furniture that wouldn’t look out of place on the decks on the Millennium Falcon. Well, not quite, but their innovative creations revolutionised the way we design our homes.
At Modern Onion, we have several inspired collections of timeless, modern lounge chairs. Mid-century were way ahead of their time. We’re talking Arne Jacobsen, Eero Aarnio, Thor Larsen, Eero Saarinen; all these incredible works of art available at your fingertips.
Introducing the Egg Chair, this chair was designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958, commissioned by the Royal Hotel in Copenhagen in Denmark. This chair is all about the sleek, chic exterior, moulded into an oval-like shape. Made of fiberglass shells covered with fabric, the seat is cushioned, and the slope arm rest that curves to the top of the chair creates a warm embrace - no better way to have your afternoon nap.
Arne Jacobsen's Swan Chair comes as the original companion to the Egg Chair. Its graceful ‘wings’ allow you to rest your arms comfortably, with the seat slightly curved inward. Likewise, it’s made out of fiberglass shells that can be upholstered with various types of fabrics, from leather to cashmere. This sophisticated design is practical for lounging, but it also makes a perfect companion for work as an office chair. They say you shouldn’t mix leisure with work, but it’s difficult when these chairs are so comfy and classy.
Now, when you think of egg chairs, the most notorious of them all is the Ovalia creation. Almost 10 years later from the initial Jacobsen design, Henrick Thor-Larsen evolved the design into his own. This chair has made a cameo appearance in one of the highest grossing sci-fi films of all time: Men in Black. Having its own purpose in the film, this chair serves the likes of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, with its literal egg-shaped pod, cushioned seat and inside interior, upholstered of different fabrics such as wool. With the exterior made out of fiberglass shell, completed with a shiny, white finish. The base is made from aluminium, which is also painted white to give it an excellent shine. You don’t have to be the Men In Black to look cool.
Perhaps you like the chairs to be a little more spacious? If that’s the case, then you might appreciate Aarnio's Ball Globe’ lounge chair, designed in 1963. This lustrous, globe chair consists of laminated fiberglass shells, available in both white and black, upholstered with wool interior for extra comfort. If having a stationary chair isn't enough, we also have Aarnio’s ‘Hanging Bubble Chair’, a modification of the first ball globe chair. Just like its name, this ‘Bubble’ chair comprises of sheer transparent acrylic shell, with a removable PU cushions available in many colours including red, black and white. Inspired by mid-century modern architecture, Aarnio wanted to create an illusion of drifting away, levitating you off the ground and into space. The transparency of the shell enables light to penetrate through, so you can enjoy your own quiet little bubble with warmth from the rays of sunshine.
Every Living room needs a coffee table, somewhere to rest our warm beverages (and margaritas!). Our reproduction lounge collection includes the famous ‘Oval Tulip’ coffee table with Italian Carrara marble. The Tulip coffee table comprises of lustrous Italian Carrara marbling detail, attached to a curved fiberglass base with a polished white finish. The Oval Tulip coffee table was highly popularised in the 1950s, and just like the egg chairs, they became a crucial part of mid-century interior design. We also offer Aarnio Parabel Side table replica - a funky, fun fungi that won’t create slimy moulds in your living room, but it has been moulded using fiberglass to create a fantastic work of art. This side table would be considered as a great partner to pair with the egg chair, or even the hanging bubble chair, to make a perfect, cubism inspired living room.
Of course, at Modern Onion, we can customise the chairs made to order, therefore whichever fabric you desire, whether it's cashmere, Italian leather or premium wool, we are able to do that for you. We have all kinds of colors available to suit every kind of environment you wish to decorate these chairs in, and we ensure that these chairs and tables are made to the highest quality.
These chairs and coffee tables will forever remain a timeless piece, no matter where you are, so after a long, tiring day at work, it's only natural to give yourself a break. So why not sit back with a glass of gin and tonic in one of these iconic chairs?
